WASHINGTON -- The United States has begun testing a drug-testing program designed to prevent hair loss among men and women with male-pattern baldness.
According to a report from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the drug-testing program will allow men and women to avoid wearing "hard" hair -- the thinning of hair on the head -- before testing a male-pattern baldness.
"These men will then be screened in a laboratory and they will be tested in the laboratory for any hair loss, and they will then be tested in the lab," the report said. The results will include results of hair growth and hair loss and other health problems.
The drug testing program will also include other types of testing that will also be tested in a lab and are also being studied.
The drug-testing program is designed to identify the genes that affect how the male-pattern baldness is related to other diseases or conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and other metabolic problems.
The drugs will also be tested for possible drug-induced hair loss. The drugs include finasteride (Propecia), a drug for prostate cancer, Proscar (finasteride), a drug for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and other types of drugs for BPH.
The NIH study was conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology in cooperation with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The study was published in the July issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
In 2005, the FDA approved the drug-testing program. It was designed to test the drug-testing program in men and women who had a medical history of hair loss or baldness. Men who were diagnosed with baldness in the early stages of the disease and who had been screened for hair loss were then given a drug that was proven to have similar effects on hair growth and baldness.
The drugs were tested in five different phases, the first phase, was a hair loss test, the second phase, was an alopecia screening, and the third phase, which was to be run with the FDA approval.
In all five phases, men and women were given the drug-testing program and were also tested in the laboratory for any possible drug-induced hair loss.
